A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
“THE STORIES TAUGHT CHILDREN TO SEE LIFE WITH EYES WIDE OPEN. ”
– TONI MORRISON (Novelist, 1993 Nobel Laureate for literature)
WHY? Why support Blue Metropolis?
Literature, diversity, inclusion, freedom of expression, academic perseverance: all good reasons to give to Blue Metropolis. Perhaps you have your own reasons. You may want to support free children’s programming in Montreal’s poorer neighbourhoods. Or ensure that Montreal retains this jewel of a literary festival which, for 25 years, has welcomed major authors from around the world. Annie Proulx, Anita Desai, Richard Ford, Colm Tóbín, Amitav Ghosh have been our guests, along with Canadian and Quebec greats like Anne Carson, Margaret Atwood and Michel Tremblay.
Some of you may simply be impressed with the resilience our team who weathered the pandemic and managed to produce a 2021 festival almost entirely online. Just a reminder: the latest edition of Blue Metropolis featured 230 activities of every description, enlisted 430 guest participants, and reached 222,146 festivalgoers, either at live events or online.
Social issues that literature tackles head on
Many donors support the Blue Metropolis Festival because of its editorial choices, its policy of inviting authors, personalities and specialists who don’t shy away from incisive, crucial issues. I can’t reveal too much about next spring’s programming, but I can tell you that the festival will focus on Age. The age of individuals and the contribution seniors make to society; the accelerated aging of the planet and its environment; the aging of society and the stress that comes with transformation. We’ll hear from philosophers, we’ll ponder wisdom, and we’ll examine the life of admirable women who have changed the world. The 2022 edition will be balm for the soul, I guarantee it! We launched two major social and educational programs.
How to get there?
Whenever I write a letter asking for support, I remind my readers that public subsidies cannot cover all our costs. Government funding, from all levels and sources, is generous and crucial. But Blue Metropolis also needs donations, sponsorships and ticket sales to finance its activities. These private sources make up 40% of our budget. Needless to say, revenue from ticket sales was severely affected this year by our shift to digital programming.
We would appreciate your support. The benefit to society will be real, and it will be tangible.
We owe everything to the wonderful generosity of our donors.
With heartfelt thanks,
– William St-Hilaire
