THE YOUNG STEELWORKERS CLUB
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
For this second edition of the project, The Young Steelworkers Club introduced 5th and 6th grade students (mainly from cities on Montreal’s South Shore) to the world of comics and graphic novels, while also teaching them about the manufacturing of steel and its countless uses in our daily lives.
In 2025-2026, this exciting project, carried out with the support of ArcelorMittal, consists of two parts.
- Part 1: During the first part, ArcelorMittal experts introduce students to the world of steel using photos, diagrams, videos, workers’ equipment, steel objects, and more.
Then, in the second part, the writer Jean-François Laliberté and illustrator Sacha Lefebvre, our comic book experts, present their work to students and guide them in creating their very own comic strips. - Part 2: Jean-François and Sacha lead a second and final workshop entirely dedicated to helping students with their own comic strips.
In spring 2026, at the end of the project, an exhibition will showcased the best student comics at participating libraries, schools, and at the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival.
This new project format builds on everything achieved last year: a fun quiz for the whole family, book and documentary recommendations about steel for all ages, and original texts by three children’s authors—available in both written and podcast formats, narrated by professional actors.

Homonym. It’s a big word for someone in Grade Three. But I love big words. I also love how when I say homonym my mouth feels filled with sounds.
In case you don’t know the word homonym it means words that sound the same, but have different meanings. Like see (what you see with your eyes) and sea (the kind you swim in).
Yesterday, in class, I raised my hand when Ms. Mathilde asked if someone could think of another
homonym.
“Yes, Isobel,” she said.
“Steel and steal. There is a steel factory in our town, and robbers are people who steal stuff.”

Alors la nuit dernière, j’ai roulé hors de la boîte, puis sur le plancher, et j’ai roulé encore sous la porte. Dehors, j’ai filé longtemps.

Rafael aura 10 ans dans une semaine. Pour la première fois de sa vie, il n’a pas hâte au jour de son anniversaire. Pour la première fois de sa vie, il ne pense pas aux cadeaux qu’il va recevoir, mais plutôt à ce qu’il a perdu : une famille unie. Le mois dernier, ses parents lui ont annoncé qu’ils se séparaient. Il ne s’y attendait pas du tout. Cette nouvelle a eu l’effet d’un tremblement de terre sur l’île de ses certitudes. Depuis, chaque matin, il se réveille avec une boule dans la gorge et une lourdeur au corps. Un poids. Un poids lourd.

Linda Amyot
Founder of À VOIX HAUTE, writer, writing workshop facilitator, editor, researcher-screenwriter for TV documentaries and events. Also director of youth programming at the Blue Metropolis Festival since 2016. She is also a children’s editor at Leméac, where she publishes novels and collections of short stories for the general public and teenagers. Winner of major awards for two of her children’s novels: La fille d’en face (Prix des libraires and TD Award 2011) and Le jardin d’Amsterdam (Prix des bibliothèques de la Ville de Montréal and Governor General’s Award 2014).
THE GRAPHIC NOVEL WRITERS
Jean-François Laliberté
Auteur, scénariste, père de famille, ingénieur et maintenant mangaka, Jean-François partage efficacement son temps entre ces différents rôles. Il se permet de puiser l’inspiration pour ses récits dans une très grande variété de genres littéraires, comme en fait foi le Prix de la Rivière Ouelle de la nouvelle policière que lui a décerné la Société du roman policier de Saint-Pacôme, en 2012. Il a également remporté au Bédéis Causa 2019 le prix Réal-Fillion pour son premier album de bande dessinée professionnel : U-Merlin – Les épreuves de l’écuyer.
Sacha Lefebvre
Illustrateur professionnel depuis 2010, Sacha Lefebvre est passionné de manga, de comics et de BD depuis toujours. Formé au Collège Dawson en Illustration et Design, c’est le manga, avec ses scènes remplies d’actions stimulantes et d’émotions puissantes qui a inspiré son style. Il le transmet avec brio à travers les projets artistiques qu’il réalise au quotidien. Jean-François Laliberté (scénariste) et lui ont remporté au Bédéis Causa 2019 le prix Réal-Fillion pour leur premier album de bande dessinée professionnel, U-Merlin – Les épreuves de l’écuyer.
THE AUTHORS
Emmanuel Lauzon
In his spare time, Emmanuel enjoyed producing music using a small midi controller and editing software. He also practiced writing, exploring different genres and types of texts. Nothing serious at first. But things really got going when he published Pou-Ah! his first children’s novel. In 2016, he quit his job to devote himself to his career as a full-time author.
In 2020, thanks to a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, Emmanuel revived an old dream, setting up a small home studio in his office to produce an audio book adaptation of Pou-Ah!
Today, with 15 publications to his name and his head still full of new ideas, Emmanuel considers his choice to dedicate himself to creation to be the best decision of his life. In addition to writing, he spends part of his time developing and offering cultural mediation workshops for all kinds of audiences.
Martine Richard
With a background in teaching, Martine Richard has been publishing since 2001. She is a two-time winner of the Grand Prix Tout-petits de l’Association des auteurs de la Montérégie (AAM), resulting in two children’s books, Le Grand Ménage d’Alice l’écrevisse (2009) and L’étoile et le pélican (2024). In 2006 and 2012, she was awarded 4th and 1st prize in the Concours national des paroliers for her song lyrics. In 2004, Les éditions de la Paix awarded her the Prix Excellence for her children’s novel Chapeau, Camomille! The author was coordinator at the AAM from 2014 to 2022.
Paul Martin
Paul Martin is a children’s author and illustrator. His illustrated books combine imagination and learning, friendship and exploration. He works within an economy of words in his texts and detail in his drawings. He has written and illustrated numerous children’s books, notably for Éditions de l’Isatis and Les 400 Coups. He has produced a large number of illustrations for educational and school projects, as well as for a Montreal chocolate factory. In addition to his work in children’s literature and illustration, he has worked as an exhibition designer for numerous museums, art director for a magazine, and creator of movie and event posters. He also spent 12 years as art director for a public transit organization. He lives and works in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Montérégie.
Monique Polak
Monique Polak is the author of 33 books for young people. Her most recent book is Open Science: Knowledge for Everyone (Orca). Monique is a three-time winner of the Quebec Writers’ Federation Janet Savage Blachford Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature (formerly the QWF Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature). Monique taught at Marianopolis College for 35 years. She is also a freelance journalist whose stories have appeared in the Montreal Gazette and in Postmedia publications across the country. Monique’s next book Remember This: The Fascinating World of Memory will be published in fall 2024 by Orca Books.
THE ACTORS
Jeanne Bellefeuille
From an early age, Jeanne Bellefeuille has nurtured a great passion for cinema, music, literature and theater. Jeanne has been playing the piano since the age of 7, and has also taught at the École de Musique Enchantée. She is involved in various artistic, social and environmental projects. Passionate, sensitive, rigorous and versatile are good adjectives to describe her.
Philippe Vanasse-Paquet
Amoureux de son art, il interprète ses rôles avec naturel et vérité et s’adapte rapidement aux demandes des réalisateurs. Passionné de cinéma depuis son plus jeune âge, Philippe intègre une agence artistique dès l’âge de 8 ans. Il aura alors la chance de faire ses premiers pas au cinéma en étant dirigé par Wim Wenders. On le verra ensuite dans plusieurs publicités, courts-métrages et plus récemment dans des séries télé telles que À coeur battant, Temps de chien, Comme des têtes pas de poule, etc. En plus d’être acteur, Philippe se trace également une place dans le milieu de la voix où il cumule plusieurs expériences en doublage et surimpression vocale ainsi qu’en voix hors champs, télé et radio. Depuis 2019, il obtient des rôles principaux comme doubleur, entre autres dans les films Frida, Avatar 2 (Spider), En avant (Ian) et Ron ne va plus, (Barney). Philippe a aussi été danseur de Hip hop dans une troupe compétitive pendant 8 ans, ce qui l’a amené à participer aux championnats du monde de Hip Hop (HHI) en 2018.

Pascal Audet
Détenteur d’un DEC en génie mécanique et d’un baccalauréat en génie des matériaux et de la métallurgie de l’Université Laval, Pascal Audet occupe le poste de Coordonnateur sénior, Production au Fours et Approvisionnement. À ce titre, il est responsable de la coordination des opérations de production et de la gestion des fours, en veillant à l’optimisation des procédés, à la qualité des produits et au respect des standards de sécurité. Précédemment, Pascal a assumé des fonctions de sénior aux opérations durant 8 ans, où il a supervisé les activités de production et contribué à l’amélioration des performances opérationnelles. Il a également occupé le poste d’ingénieur de procédé pendant 7 ans, développant son expertise en optimisation des procédés métallurgiques et en gestion de projets industriels.
Philippe Plouffe
Philippe Plouffe travaille chez ArcelorMittal Produits longs Canada depuis plus de 26 ans et occupe le poste de mécanicien d’entretien à l’usine de réduction de Contrecoeur.
Titulaire d’un diplôme en Techniques de génie mécanique, il aime relever les défis quotidiens liés à la maintenance industrielle.
Reconnu pour son grand esprit d’équipe, Philippe est ouvert aux idées de ses collègues lors de la résolution de problèmes. Il s’implique également dans diverses facettes de son travail, notamment la formation, les visites d’écoles et l’organisation d’activités avec ses collègues, afin de tisser des liens et entretenir l’esprit de camaraderie.
Karine Roy
Karine Roy est une partenaire d’affaires travaillant chez ArcelorMittal Produits longs Canada depuis plus de 10 ans. Professionnelle en ressources humaines, elle est passionnée par le développement professionnel. Elle anime des rencontres de co-développement dans le but d’outiller les professionnels de l’entreprise à exploiter le maximum de leurs compétences. Membre du Comité des Femmes d’Acier, Karine est très impliquée dans chaque projet et activité dans le but de promouvoir la femme.
Claudia St-Laurent
Diplômée en Génie industriel du Cégep de Trois-Rivières en 2022, j’occupe depuis ce temps le poste de Spécialiste de procédés – Coulée Continue à l’Aciérie de l’Ouest. Mes principales responsabilités consistent à soutenir les opérations, veiller à la conformité des processus en matière de qualité et, simultanément, travailler à l’optimisation du procédé.
J’ai aussi travaillé pendant 5 étés à l’Aciérie de l’Est comme étudiante (Pont-Roulant Brame).

École du Carrousel à Varennes
Located in Varennes, École du Carrousel will welcome 344 students in 17 groups, from preschool to grade 6, in 2024-2025.
The teaching staff is complemented by four specialists: two in physical education, one in English and one in music. Several professionals work closely with the entire school staff to offer complementary services to students. Nearly 200 children benefit from the daycare and lunch services. The daycare team is made up of a daycare technician and some fifteen educators. The school also has a team of professionals offering a whole range of complementary services, including remedial education, psychology, psycho-education and speech therapy. Special education technicians and an attendant for handicapped students ensure the supervision of all these children.
École Mère-Marie-Rose à Contrecœur
Located in Contrecoeur, École Mère-Marie-Rose welcomes close to 400 students in groups from preschool age 4 to grade 6. Students are supervised by a team of teachers and specialists, supplemented by professionals to meet special needs.
École Cœurs-Vaillants à Contrecœur
Located in Contrecœur, École des Cœurs-Vaillants has welcomed 437 students in groups from kindergarten to grade 6 since September 2014. The teaching staff is made up of 22 regular teachers as well as three physical educators, two English teachers and one music teacher.

In a welcoming and dynamic setting, the library provides the population with rich and diversified documentation to contribute to the development, education and personal fulfillment of each individual.

The heritage value of the Le Survenant library lies in its urban location. It was built in Old Sorel, on land that belonged to the Sisters of Charity of Saint-Hyacinthe before becoming the property of the Saint-Pierre parish, from which the City purchased it.
