Why support Blue Metropolis?

TO PROMOTE MONTREAL’S CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY THROUGH A MULTILINGUAL INTERNATIONAL LITERARY FESTIVAL

Blue Metropolis is a literary festival of international calibre that brings together some 300 authors from 13 countries to present programming that includes close to 270 events in 8 languages, with 100 events intended for children 0 to 12 years of age. Last year, the Festival reached over 100,000 people. Our 20th edition will take place April 20 to 29, 2018.

TO ENCOURAGE ACADEMIC PERSEVERANCE AND OVERCOME PREJUDICE

Blue Metropolis’ educational and social programs provide young people with an opportunity to take part in innovative literary activities. In 2018, our Rhythm & Words project gave young people the opportunity to work in an environment that involved linguistic duality and to reflect
on social inclusion, cultural diversity and the environment. This type of program uses writing and reading as therapeutic tools to promote intercultural understanding and encourage young people to stay in school.

TO OPEN UP A DIALOGUE ON SOCIAL ISSUES

Each year, Blue Metropolis finds inspiration in major social movements when developing its literary events. Through interviews, writing workshops and talks on topics such as sexual diversity, religion, feminism and aging, our events make it possible to open up a dialogue on current social issues.

New in 2018: a literary prize and a scholarship will be awarded to an author from the LGBT+ community, for the quality of their work.

TO GIVE ABORIGINAL AUTHORS A VOICE

In 2018, for the first time at the Festival, the jury that awards the First Peoples Prize will be made up entirely of authors, academics and thinkers from the Indigenous community. As in each year, the winner will take part in a number of events that promote and explore Aboriginal literary culture. In addition, this year, the winner will also be a source of inspiration for a major pan-Canadian writing contest.

TO SHARE A LOVE OF READING AND WRITING WITH CHILDREN

It’s well known that reading and writing have a positive effect on children. That’s why, each year, Blue Metropolis is committed to offering children and adolescents programming and workshops that are both entertaining and educational.
